You mentioned one of my favorite Midnight Citizen eps, "Corn Country," and the film REPO MAN, which I finally watched this week on a plane coming back from a family vacation. Loved it & not sure what took me so long to finally see it! "I can't believe I used to like these guys," during the lounge scene was my favorite part, and everyone on the plane heard me snort laugh at something to which they were completely unaware. Remember when we all had to watch the same movie on flights?

Anyway, HOW DARE YOU SPEAK ILL OF JOE BOB BRIGGS AND THE FINE FOLKS AT AMC/SHUDDER!!!!

Just kidding. It's a mixed bag. I really wanted to comment about "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" as a secular makeout song. Yes, I know the Simpsons ep well ("Bart Sells His Soul," and no I didn't have to look it up*), but if you check out the origin of the lyrics, you'll find that it was probably the most religious song you had on the playlist. Hope the anniversary party was awesome & congrats on your folks' 50th!

*I did have to look up the spelling of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" however.

I was just thinking that "Donnie Darko" is kinda the millenial "Repo Man." Both are very odd genre bending sci-fi comedies. Among a lot of other similarities, they're movies we can interpret infinitely and talk about long into the night.

Don't know if you're a bigger punk fun than I am (I'm very minimal, at best), but the lounge band in "Repo Man" is the Circle Jerks. I actually think it's one of their few filmed performances. Also, their bass player is Kevin, the nerd who sings the "Feelin' 7-Up" song at the beginning that makes Emilio push him into a mountain of cans. That movie is a great example of a "good" movie made great by its cast, soundtrack, and general vibe that was just in the air at the time when it was made. Other examples of this, I think, are "Dazed and Confused," "The French Connection," and DEFINITELY "Donnie Darko."

Thanks for always listening, man!

Haha, great comparisons! Love me some DAZED AND CONFUSED. I also laughed during REPO MAN when Emilio is in the hospital, lifts the blanket off a patient on a gurney, sees it's the nerdy coworker, and puts the blanket back over him without comment. I'll definitely revisit the film again.
